Pioneers Edged Late By Yale on Saturday Night

BRIDGEPORT, Conn.— A late goal by Yale's Joe Snively broke the tie as the Sacred Heart men's ice hockey team fell to the Bulldogs 2-1 on Saturday night at Webster Bank Arena.  The Pioneers (4-11-2) scored first in the second period before the Bulldogs rattled off two unanswered scores (5-7) both scored by Snively.

Sophomore Zach Tsekos registered the lone goal for SHU in the second. His shorthanded tally gives the Pioneers shorthanded goals in back-to-back weekends. Junior Brett Magnus recorded 36 saves in goal for SHU.

Turning Point…

Momentum was on Yale's side early in the first period, outshooting the Pioneers 14-5 in the opening period. SHU took the first goal of the game just nine seconds into the second period as Tsekos picked up the shorthanded goal. Yale attack finally answered just over the halfway point with the goal by Snively.

SHU drew the favor of two power plays early in the third period but were unable to connect on the man advantage. The Bulldogs were on the rush just under five minutes to play in regulation. Snively crashed to the net and sent the puck on goal, it bounced off Pioneer defensman's leg and over Magnus blocker side for the game winner. The Pioneers had chances on the extra attacker power play late, Ruslan Rakhmatov nearly tied it with a rope from the point but it hit off the left pipe. Sam Tucker made 18 saves for the Bulldogs in the non-conference matchup.

How They Scored…

00:09 – 2nd Period: SHU 1, Yale 0: The Pioneers lost the opening draw to start the second. Tsekos pressured from the face-off and picked up the turnover along the Bulldogs blue line. He deked out Tucker on the breakaway for his fourth goal of the game.

10:23 – 2nd Period: SHU 1, Yale 1: The Bulldogs worked the puck on the quick delayed penalty call on the Pioneers. Billy Sweezey collected the puck at the left point from Ryan Hitchcock. The defenseman found Snively at the doorstep for the one-timer passed the outstretched Magnus.

15:32 – 3rd Period: Yale 2, SHU 1: The Bulldogs worked the rush after SHU two chances in the Yale zone. Hitchcock sent the puck ahead to Ted Hart in neutral ice.
