Men's Ice Hockey Hits the Road to Take on RIT

Setting the Scene... The Sacred Heart men's ice hockey team travels to face RIT for a two game series beginning on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. in Rochester N.Y.

Last Time Out... The Pioneers split the two game home series against Robert Morris this past weekend as the Pioneers defeated the Colonials for the first time in program history in the first game by a final score of 2-1. In the first game, freshman Austin Magera netted the game winner to give the Pioneers the 2-1 victory.

Last Meeting... Led by a 32 save effort from junior goaltender Brett Magnus the Sacred Heart University men's hockey team earned the 2-0 shutout victory over RIT to advance to the Atlantic Hockey quarterfinals. The Pioneers (13-20-4) used a pair of first period goals to pull away with the deciding game three over the Tigers (15-20-2) at the Gene Polisseni Center. Co-captain Mike Crocock tallied the opening goal for the Pioneers before sophomore Austin McIlmurray doubled the lead with his power-play goal in the final 34 seconds of the first period. Zach Tsekos recorded a pair of assists in the second straight game to lead the Pioneers. Marc Johnstone and Josh Allan also added assists in the win.

Scouting The Tigers... RIT returns 20 players from last season's squad, including 11 forwards, six defensemen and all three goaltenders. In addition, six newcomers join the squad for the 2018-19 season, giving RIT depth as they look to earn its third league title in the last five seasons and fourth overall. RIT (6-6-1, 4-4-1 AHA) is looking to get back into the win column after dropping a pair of home contests to Air Force last weekend. The team is led by senior captain Erik Brown who currently leads the team a total of six goals this season.

Benson Named Rookie of Week: Sacred Heart University freshman goaltender Josh Benson was named the Atlantic Hockey Association Rookie of Week for his play against Robert Morris this past weekend. This is Benson's first award as well as the first weekly award to be given to a SHU hockey player. Benson had an impressive weekend as he tallied a total of 48 saves in goal in the two game series against Robert Morris. He only allowed a total of two goals in the series which allowed SHU to win the first game as he only allowed one to help give the Pioneers a 2-1 victory over the Colonials for the first time in program history.

Freshman Finding There Way: This years freshman class is showing impressive growth as they have scored a total of five goals, seven assists for a total of 12 points. Freshman Todd Goehring netted his first career goal in the Canisius series while Austin Magera and Ryan Steele each compiled assists. Steele recorded one while Magera tallied two.

Bavaro Breaks Into the Season On High Note... Junior forward Vito Bavaro scored his first goals of the season last Friday Night against Mercyhurst has he tallied two goals for the Pioneers in the tight 4-3 overtime loss. Bavaro's second goal helped send the game into overtime as a fired a shot passed the goalie at 19:00 in third period off a pair of assists by redshirt junior Jason Cotton and sophomore Matt Tugnutt.
