SHU Opens NEC Play with Sweep of St. Francis Brooklyn

NEW HAVEN, Conn.- The Sacred Heart men's tennis team opened Northeast Conference play with a shutout of St. Francis Brooklyn at Yale on Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers did not drop a set en route to improving to 3-2 on the season.

Karan Narula swept his opponent at fifth singles for his first dual match win of the season, while Mathieu Pilote-Schraenen and Derek Chapman lost just one and two games, respectively, at fourth and third singles. Pilote moves to an even 6-6 on the year, while Chapman now leads SHU with eight wins.

Brian Power had the toughest match of the day, squeaking by his first singles opponent in two tiebreakers. Matt Dean was a 6-4, 6-2 winner at second singles, moving to 3-1 in dual play. Cory Seltman won by default at sixth singles to complete the sweep.

Only needing one doubles victory due to a Chapman and Anthony Santino winning by default at third doubles, Sacred would go on to capture both doubles matches. Dean and Power improved to an even 5-5 with 6-4 victory at first doubles, while Seltman and Pilote won their first dual match together, 6-2.

SHU returns to Yale on Saturday, hosting Drexel at 5 pm
