Men’s Tennis Drops Heartbreaker in NEC Quarterfinals

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The Sacred Heart men's tennis team's season came to an abrupt end on Friday afternoon at the 2016 Northeast Conference Championships hosted at the Mercer Country Tennis Courts.

SHU won the doubles point with a pair of 6-4 decisions and was ahead 3-1 after taking two of three matches to end in two sets. Needing to win just one of the three that went three sets, the Pioneers could not pull through and ultimately fell 4-3, ending their season at 9-14, the most wins for the program since its 2011 NEC Championships season.

Sophomores Mathieu Pilote-Schraenen and Cory Seltman end the year on a two-match winning streak after prevailing in their second doubles match. Helping clinch the doubles point and moving above .500 in the process were Derek Chapman and Karan Narula, who finish the season 7-6 together following their victory at the third position.

Setlman is the lone Pioneer to end the season with a two-match winning streak in singles play, as he dropped just a total of two games at the sixth spot for his team-best 16th win of the year, good for third most in the NEC. Also sweeping, albeit in tighter fashion, was senior Matt Dean, who ends his Sacred Heart career with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at the second position.

Although Wagner swept the fifth singles match, SHU was still in prime position to move on to the semifinals after Brian Power and Narula took the first set of their respective first and fourth singles matches, 6-4 and 6-3. The two both fell 4-6 in the second set though, sending the contests to a pivotal third set.

Meanwhile at third singles, Chapman was attempting a comeback after dropping his opening set, 5-7. He came back with a 6-3 triumph in the second to make it three matches heading to a winner take all third set.

Two of those three third sets were decided by slimmest of margins. Power came nearest to sending Sacred Heart to the semifinals, engaging in a back and forth thriller before the senior came up just short, 5-7. Chapman's third set was much of the same, with the freshman battling his opponent till it ended 4-6. Narula ran out of gas, falling 2-6.
