SHU Competes At The Keystone Classic

The Sacred Heart Wrestling team hit the road for the Keystone Classic, hosted by Penn University. The field of competition was stiff, as the Pioneers drew the short end of the straw in my weight classes matching up with past All-Americans and NCAA Champions.

125- Tim Johnson (1-2)

Time Johnson drew first seeded Nick Suriano of Penn State, and went on to lose by fall in the first period for his opening match. Johnson then picked up a decision over Garcia of F&M University 11-4. Johnson ended the night losing by fall to Higgins of Penn State.

133- Gerard Daly (1-2)

Gerard Daly had similar luck as he was set to face the number two-seeded Jered Cortez of Penn State. Daley battled tough but went on to fall in the first period. In the wrestle backs Daly picked up a decision over Martoccio of F&M by a score of 10-3. To end the day he fell to Canfora of Drexel by fall in the first period.

141- Brandon Levesque (0-2)

Brandon Levesque made it to the round of 16 after receiving a first round bye. He went on to face Samuel Goldman of Harvard who ended up taking the match due to a medical forfeit. He also medical forfeited this second match.

149- Kyle Brady (1-2)

Kyle Brady was scheduled to wrestling the #1 ranked 149 pounder in Zain Retherford who was the returning NCAA Champion last year. Brady went on to lose by Fall in the first period. Bouncing back in the wrestle backs Brady picked up a 3-1 decision over Cimato from Drexel who is a 2x NCAA tournament qualifier. Brady went on to lose a 20-6 maj. decision versus Errico of Penn.

157- Paul Curtin (0-2)

 Curtin advanced to the round of 16 due to a medical forfeit, but then lost by technical fall to Jake Wentzel of Pitt. He then took on Londoff of Appalachian State who picked up the fall late in the 3rd period.

165- Matt Fisher (0-2)

Senior Matt Fisher wrestled the closest match of the day but ended up losing to Dakota Greene of Drexel by a decision 9-4. In his first round of wrestle backs he took on Stormer of Harvard who picked up a first period fall to end Fishers day.

174- Joe Toci (0-2)

Joe Toci had yet again another tough draw having to take on the #1 seeded Geno Morelli of Penn State. Toci went on to lose by fall in the second period. In his opening match of wrestle backs Toci lost a hard fought decision to Virginia's Wagner who held of Toci to win 3-2.

184- Elliot Antler (0-2)

 Elliot Antler had a very tough draw as he had to take on last seasons NCAA runner up Bo Nickal of Penn State. Antler wrestled tough for the first period but went on to lose by fall in the second period. Antler then lost a close decision to Fagg-Daves of Rider by a score of 4-3.

197- Sasha Oliinyk (0-2)

Sasha Oliinyk took on Zach Bruce of Pitt, and eventually lost by fall late in the first period. Going into the wrestle backs Oliinyk had another tough opponent in Kirby of Harvard who won by fall in the first period.

285- John Hartnett (0-2)

The Last Pioneer to take the mat was John Hartnett who took on Mauro Correnti of Rider University. Hartnett battled tough but lost by major decision 10-2.  In the first round of wrestle offs Hartnett fell short losing by fall to Chakonis of Northwestern.

The Pioneers take a break for thanksgiving and hit the mats again December 3rd as they take ok Davidson University and Appalachian State at Davidson U.
