SHELTON, Conn. - The Sacred Heart women's hockey team beatBrown, 5-4, on Saturday with a huge effort in the third period at the Sports Center of ConneSHUcticut.
Brown (2-13-0) again scored the first goal of contest at 5:46 of the first period with Carey recording her second of the season. Sacred Heart (13-4-0) tied the game 1-1 at 17:22 with a tally by Victoria Grimmer assisted by Maddie Bishop.
Katie Swanstrom put Brown back on top, 2-1, just before the end of the opening period (19:01) with her first of the year, Steph Rempe contributed the assist.
The Pioneers tied the contest again in the second period with Grimmer scoring her second of the day at 10:39, again assisted by Maddie Bishop. Brown countered to regain a 3-2 lead with a score from senior Sam Donovan at 13:48 with the assist from Sena Hanson.
The Pioneers concluded the second with seven shots, with Brown on 11.
Sacred Heart opened the third with two-straight goals in under a minute for a massive effort to take a 4-3 lead. Maddie Bishop (4:50) had the first score while Taylor Moreland (5:48) tallied the second.
Maybelline Beiring tied the contest 4-4 for the Bears at 7:12 assisted by Carey.
But the Pioneers showed great spirit to respond again with Meghan Kebalka with the game winner for the at 13:44, assisted by Lilly Cleary.
The Bears had the shot lead for the third straight period with a 12-7 advantage in the final stanza and outshot the Pioneers 34-16 overall. Brown was 1-for-3 overall on the power play and went 3-for-3 on the penalty kill, moving its weekend total to a perfect 10-for-10.
Sarah Erban stopped 30 shots for Sacred Heart, while Julianne Landry made 11 saves in net for the Bears.
The pioneers are back in action Friday, Jan 5 against St Catherine at 8:30 at the Sports Center of Connecticut
