Women's Hockey Wins On Lewis' Overtime Goal

The Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey team defeated New England Women's Hockey Association foe Franklin Pierce University Ravens, 2-1 in overtime, Friday afternoon at the SportsCenter of Connecticut. The victory improves the Pioneers 7-3-1 overall and 3-1-1 in league play, while the Ravens fall to 5-4-0 on the year and 3-4-0 in NEWHA action.

The Ravens won the face-off to open the extra period and put two shot wide before the Pioneers took possession. A shot from Maddie Bishop was saved and Jayne Lewis put the game-winning goal home on the rebound.

Sarah Erban minded the net for the Pioneers and made 27 saves in earning the victory. Emme Ostrander stopped 26 shots for the Ravens

The two teams meet again on Saturday afternoon, with puck drop scheduled for 4:00 pm at the SportsCenter.

First Period

  • Neither squad could break through in the opening period, with Erban stopping 13 shots for the Pioneers and Ostrander making seven saves
  • The lone penalty of the first was a hooking call on the Pioneers, which they successfully killed off

Second Period

  • Erban robbed Haley Parker with 11:00 to play in the period, stopping the point-blank shot on stick side
  • Ostrander answered Erban 90 seconds later, stopping a power play shot from straight on from Maddie Bishop
  • Shoebottom netted the first goal of the game with 74 seconds left before the second intermission
  • The period again saw just one penalty, a tripping against Franklin Pierce, which the Ravens killed

Third Period

  • Nicole Amato evened the score early in the period, knocking home a pass from Anna Margaret DiSciscio
  • There was again just one penalty called, this on the Ravens, which they again killed off

By The Numbers

  • Both teams finished with 28 shots in the game
  • The Pioneers won 27 face-offs on the night, with 16 victories credited to Anne Klein
  • Only three penalties were whistled in the contest
