FAIRFIELD, Conn.— Freshman Caroline Kruger of the Sacred Heart University softball team was named Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week for her standout play this past week.
Kruger batted .300 on the week, recording a double and four runs batted in through seven games of play. She recorded a hit in every game of the Seahawk Softball Showcase as the Pioneers went 4-1 in the tournament.
She opened the tournament with her first career RBI on the single to left field in the eighth inning as SHU defeated tournament host UNC-Wilmington 6-3 on Friday afternoon. The rookie outfielder followed that up with another single in the Pioneers 2-1 win over Youngstown State to end the day.
Kruger added her first multi-RBI game with her two-run double in the sixth inning of the Pioneers 4-2 loss to UNC- Wilmington. She capped the tournament with one hit, one run batted in and two runs scored in the 13-0 win over North Carolina A&T on Sunday afternoon.
The Pioneers will travel to Baltimore for the Hampton Inn BWI UMBC Dawg Pound Invitational beginning Friday, March 16. SHU starts the round-robin event with a matchup against La Salle at 11:00 a.m.
