The Sacred Heart University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee collected a record 1,986 canned food items, to finish third in the Northeast Conference SAAC Canned Food Drive.
The Pioneers total helped the NEC SAAC in collecting an all-time high 17,089 canned goods.
The SHU SAAC donations were made through our annual SAAC sponsored Ending Hunger Games event. This year, 54 teams registered, with a registration 'fee' of 12 canned items per team. There was also a team challenge based on which team could donate the most cans per student-athlete on their roster. The baseball team contributed seven items per student-athlete to capture that title.
The 1,986 canned items collected by SAAC is a department record, and 60 percent increase in donations from the 2018 Ending Hunger Games event. All the items collected were delivered by student-athletes to the University Interfaith Service at the chapel. Several teams, including men's lacrosse, wrestling and women's rugby assisted in loading the box truck to deliver the items to St. Charles Church in Bridgeport, CT.
Six of the 11 schools in the NEC surpassed 1,000 canned items collected. The over 17,000 items collected is a 19.4 percent increase for the conference and the fourth straight year of double-digit increase for the conference.
