Pioneers Set Above National Average NCAA Academic Progress Rate In Recent NCAA APR Rating

INDIANAPOLIS, IN.- 28 Sacred Heart University Athletic teams averaged an NCAA Academic Progress Rate of 984 which is one point above the 983 rate of the national average among all Division I athletic programs according to the latest multi-year report released by the National Collegiate Athletic Association on May 19.

Teams must earn a 930 four-year average APR to participate in NCAA championships. A score of 930 or higher puts a program in good standing with the NCAA with 1,000 serving as the maximum score. Every SHU athletic program scored above 950, with 11 of 28 (women's and men's indoor and outdoor track is counted once) at 990 or above.

Three programs, field hockey, softball, and women's ice hockey posted a perfect single-year rate of 1,000 for 2018-19 and received awards for those perfect scores last week. The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete. The APR includes both retention at an institution and academic eligibility in its calculation. The current multi-year APR report covers the 2015-16 through 2018-19 academic years. The APR is released annually.

For the first time, a portion of NCAA revenue is being distributed this year to members based on the academic achievement of student-athletes, including APR scores.  Each school can earn one academic achievement unit per year if its student-athletes meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • Earn an overall single-year all-sport Academic Progress Rate of 985 or higher.
  • Earn an overall all-sport Graduation Success Rate of 90% or higher.
  • Earn a federal graduation rate that is at least 13 percentage points higher than the federal graduation rate of the student body at that school.
