Men's Basketball Falls 72-65 To Albany

The Sacred Heart University men's basketball team dropped its second game at the Bobcats Invitational, falling 72-65, to Albany Saturday in Hamden, Conn. The Pioneers fall to 2-4 on the year and the Great Danes improve to 3-3.

E.J. Anosike recorded a double-double, scoring 19 points and 14 rebounds. Koreem Ozier and Cameron Parker both scored 11 for the Pioneers. 

The Pioneers conclude the Bobcats Invitational on Sunday, when they play Quinnipiac at 3:30 pm.

The Turning Point

  • After a Kinnon LaRose free throw drew the Pioneers within a point, Albany scored seven points in 37 seconds to open an eight-point edge

Pioneer Points

  • Anosike was 6-6 at the free throw line
  • Parker handed out five assists
  • Parker, Ozier and Jare'l Spellman all had six rebounds
  • SHU shot 18-19 from the free throw line

By the Numbers

  • SHU outrebounded the Great Danes, 40-32, with an 11-4 edge in offensive boards
  • Albany had 20 assists on its 29 made baskets
  • Cameron Healy led Albany with 24 points on 8-12 shooting

First-Half

  • For the second straight game Ozier opened the game with a three-pointer, this time 23 ticks into the contest
  • Anosike followed with a three of his own on the next possession to give the Pioneers a 6-2 lead
  • A Spellman dunk had SHU again to its largest lead of the game, 8-4 2:45 into the game
  • The lead was still four, 10-6, 2:00 later after Anosike scored in the paint
  • Albany scored the next five points, taking its first lead, 11-10 at the 13:46 mark
  • Spellman answered 26 seconds later, giving SHU a 12-11 edge
  • Albany scored the next four points and Anosike and Tyler Thomas answered with five straight to give SHU a 17-15 with 9:19 to play
  • The squads traded points over the next seven minutes and were tied after Aaron Clarke scored at 2:52
  • Albany scored the next six points to jump to a 33-27 lead with :45 seconds before the break
  • Anosike scored 16 seconds later and Clarke hit a three with a second left to close to within 33-32 at the break

 SECOND HALF

  • Ozier struck first in the second-half as well, giving the Pioneers an 34-33 edge 29 seconds into the period
  • After getting a stop, Parker scored in the paint for a 36-33 edge
  • Cameron Healy drained a three for Albany, knotting the score, and SHU would not lead again
  • After a Healy score at 16:34, Anosike drew SHU even for the final time, 38-38
  • Albany scored four straight and seven of nine to open a 45-40 advantage at the 11:50 mark
  • Trailing 47-42, LaRose drained a three at 10:54 and hit a free throw at 10:21, to get the Pioneers back within a point, 47-46
  • Albany responded with seven straight points and 14 of 20 to lead 61-52 with 7:31 to play
  • SHU mounted a charge in the final minutes, trailing 67-60 with 2:51 to play
  • Parker converted a traditional three-point play at 2:44 and then made two free throws at 2:15 to close within 67=65
  • Ahmad Clark answered with a three pointer, as Albany scored the final five points to secure the win
