Men’s Fencing Picks Up Four Victories in NFC Meet #3

BOSTON, Mass. – The Sacred Heart men's fencing team had their most-successful run of the 2019-20 season on Sunday as the Pioneers went 4-1 at the NFC Meet #3 hosted by Tufts. The Pioneers' combination of Tomas Koeck (14-1 in foil), Lawrence Tan (13-2 in foil), Lucas Wetmore (10-2 in foil) and Troy Kapitzke (13-2 in epee) combined to go 50-7 on the day in the five combined rounds of action.

  • After a 6-3 loss in the sabre to start against Dartmouth, SHU came storming back with a 9-0 sweep in the foil followed by a 6-3 triumph in the epee to clinch the 18-9 victory over the Big Green
  • Koeck, Tan and Wetmore all went 3-0 in the foil against Dartmouth while Kapitzke, Jack Bell and Nicolo Cerminara each picked up two wins in the epee
  • SHU defeated Boston Univ., 18-9, in round three as the Pioneers combined to go 17-1 in the foil and epee portions of the bout to score the nine-point win
  • Koeck and Tan went 3-0 again in the foil while all three epee – Kapitzke, Bell and Cerminara – went 3-0 to sweep the round 9-0
  • Facing the host Tufts in round five, SHU once again leaned on the foil and epee as the Pioneers went 15-3 combined with those two weapons while also picking up two points in the sabre portion to win the round 17-10
  • Mark Sharkey went 2-1 in the sabre to earn two big points for SHU while Koeck and Tan went 3-0 yet again in the foil while Kapitzke was undefeated at 3-0 in the epee
  • The only loss the Pioneers suffered on the day came in round six as SHU fell to Vassar by a score of 16-11
  • SHU won close decisions in the foil (6-3) and epee (5-4) but were unable to overcome a 9-0 loss in the sabre bout
  • Koeck dropped his first and only bout of the day in the foil while Tan and Wetmore suffered one of their two losses in the entire day, as all three of them went 2-1
  • SHU came out firing against Vassar in the epee, winning five straight bouts to claim the 5-4 win
  • The day finished in round seven as SHU defeated UMass 16-11 with major victories coming once again in the foil (9-0) and epee (7-2)
  • Koeck, Tan and Wetmore finished the day strong with 3-0 records across the board against the Minutemen while Bell and Kapitzke each went 3-0 in the epee to lead the way to the win
