RALEIGH, NC- Sacred Heart University Men's Ice Hockey senior Jason Cotton has signed a professional contract with the National Hockey League team Carolina Hurricanes this morning. Cotton agreed to a one year contract with the Hurricanes that will begin in the 2020-21 season. Cotton is the first SHU player to have signed an NHL contract in the programs history.
SHU Men's Ice Hockey head coach CJ Marottolo stated on the signing that "Jason is one of the most skillful and talented college hockey players in the country. He is special because he fully understands that the team is the most important thing and everything he does is for his team. His stats speak for themselves but his intangibles are what sets him apart. He is a terrific leader and he always goes about his business the right way. We are all proud that Jason has realized a lifelong dream of signing an NHL contract with the Carolina Hurricanes and we will all follow him with great pride. I have great confidence that Jason will adjust to the pro game and continue to take his game to a higher level."
Cotton was tabbed a top 10 Hobey Baker Award Finalist after recording a career high 37 points (20g, 17a) in 34 games with the Pioneers this season. The SHU forward served as the Pioneers' captain in 2019-20 and was named Atlantic Hockey Player of the Year and an Atlantic Hockey First Team member. Among all Division I skaters, he ranked tied for first in shorthanded goals (3) and tied for sixth in goals (20) this season. The Parker, Texas, native posted 81 points (41g, 40a) in 110 NCAA games over three seasons from 2017-20. Cotton was named the inaugural CT ICE MVP as the Pioneers clinched the cup over #17 Quinnipiac on Jan. 26 while also racking 5 goals, 5 assists for 10 points against non-conference opponents Yale, Quinnipiac, Boston University, Penn State and UCONN.
Cotton stated "signing an NHL contract has always been a dream of mine, but to do it with my brother on the same day with the same team puts it over the top. I'm proud to be a Pioneer, and I am forever grateful for everyone who has been around me these past four years. There will be many more NHL contracts coming to Sacred Heart. I'm honored to be the first NHL signing, but I know that there will be many more guys that will be in my position in the future. This is the standard for Sacred Heart hockey."
Along with Jason being signed, the Hurricanes agreed to terms with Jason's brother David who was drafted by Hurricanes in 2015.
