Delong Scores Twice But SHU Drops 4-2 Decision at Army

West Point, NY- Freshman Eric Delong (Oakville, MB) found the back of the net twice in the second period but the Pioneers fell to Army 4-2 Saturday night at Tate Rink.  Steven Legatto (Kelowna, BC) stopped 34 shots in goal for the Pioneers in the loss.  Reigning AHA Rookie of the Week Andy Starczewski also lit the lamp twice as the Black Knights completed a weekend sweep of Sacred Heart.

Army (7-8-2, 6-5-1 AHA) came out fast as the scored the opening a goal, a power play marker, at the 3:33 mark on Starczewski's third goal of the year.  Danny Colvin and Mike Hull earned assists on the play.  The Pioneers would have to play tough defense throughout the first stanza as they killed off five additional Black Knight power plays. Army outshot SHU 16-11 in the first period as Legatto posted 15 saves.

Sacred Heart (3-9-2, 2-6-1 AHA) responded out of the gates in the middle period as Delong beat Army goaltender Jay Clark 1:57 into the period.  The play was set up wijth assists from freshman Kyle Verbeek (Bloomfield, MI) and junior Ryan Warsofsky (North Marshfield, MA).  Colvin and the Black Knights would regain the lead 25 seconds later with assists from Jack Barnes and Kyle Maggard.  However, the Pioneers would send the game into the locker room tied on a power play of their own off the stick of Delong with help from seniors Nick Johnson (Windsor, CT) and Dave Jarman (Toronto, ON).

For the second straight night Army would get the better of the final period as they scored two goals to earn the victory.  The first marker came on Starczewski's second of the night with 12:02 remaining in regulation.  A five-on-three power play would lead to Army's final goal of the night 1:42 later as AHA point leader Cody Omilusik brought the game to its 4-2 final.

Sacred Heart finishes the fall semester next Sunday on the road as they take on Dartmouth in a non conference tilt in Hanover, NH.  Game time is set for 4:00 pm.
