Men's Volleyball Falls to Ball State, 3-1 at Home

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Sacred Heart University men's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to visiting Ball State Saturday evening at the Pitt Center. The loss drops the Pioneers to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in league play while the Cardinals improve to 6-4 on the year.

Emerson Waumans led the Pioneers with 16 kills and hit .229 on the night. Noah Ricchetti led SHU with 29 assists and 10 digs in the loss.

The Pioneers return to action on Friday, Feb. 15, when they travel to take on St. Francis U at 7 p.m.

First Set: Ball State 25, SHU 17

  • Ball State jumped out to a 4-1 lead before SHU battled to tie the contest at 4-4

  • After SHU took a 5-4 lead, the teams traded points to a 10-10 tie

  • Ball State then went on a 5-1 run to take a 15-11 lead, forcing a SHU timeout

  • After SHU cut the deficit to 16-13, the Cardinals went on a 7-3 run to take a commanding 23-16 lead

  • After SHU cut the score to 23-17, the Cardinals recorded a kill, followed by a Pioneer attack error to seal the 25-17 set win

Second Set: Ball State 25, SHU 21

  • The two sides played to a 7-7 tie

  • SHU pushed its lead to 10-8 before the Cardinals went on a 6-1 run to take a 14-11 lead

  • The Pioneers responded by cutting the deficit to 16-14, before Ball State went on a 7-2 run to take a 23-16 lead

  • SHU responded with a 5-1 run to cut the deficit to 24-21, but Ball State closed the set with a kill to take a 2-0 lead

Third Set: SHU 25, Ball State 16

  • SHU jumped out to an early 5-2 lead

  • Ball State battled back to tie it at 8-8 before a Cardinal's attack error gave SHU the lead for good

  • The attack error sparked a 14-5 SHU run to give the Pioneers a commanding 23-13 lead

  • Ball State cut it to as close as 23-15 before SHU closed the set for the 25-16 win

Fourth Set: Ball State 25, SHU 15

  • SHU took advantage of its carrying momentum by taking an early 3-1 lead

  • Ball State responded by tying the contest at 9-9

  • Ball State then went on a 13-4 run to take a commanding 22-13 lead

  • SHU cut it as close as 24-15 but a SHU service error sealed the 3-1 loss

  • The Pioneers hit .149 for the match
