Men's Volleyball Defeats Mount Olive 3-1

The Sacred Heart University men's volleyball team defeated University of Mount Olive, 3-1, Friday evening at the Pitt Center. The Pioneers improve to 4-1 on the year, while the Trojans fall to 7-4 on the season.

The Pioneers hit .351 for the match, with a .441 average in the deciding fourth set. Calin Butler and Rob Chatterton both tallied 16 kills, to pace the Pioneers offensive effort.

The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday, when they host Barton College at 7:00 pm.

  • Chatterton hit .636 on the night, with four blocks and two service aces
  • Butler hit .389 and finished with nine digs
  • Timothy McIntosh recorded a team-best 13 digs
  • Connor Mahony also reached double figures with 11 kills and finished at .333
  • Ramiro Balaguer handed out 45 assists for the Pioneers
  • SHU finished with 6.0 team blocks, while the Trojans had 5.0

First-Set (SHU 25-20)

  • Pioneers broke a 2-2 tie thanks to consecutive Mount Olive errors
  • Jarrod Ferguson started a 4-0 run for the Trojans with back-to-back kills, giving the visitor s 6-4 advantage
  • Butler ended the run, and then Chatterton served three in a row, with a Tischler kill making it 8-6
  • Ferguson again ended the Pioneer run, with the tip for a kill and Azeez followed, tying the score, 8-8
  • 12 and 23 with the block assists to make the score 12-9 and force a Mount Olive timeout
  • The Pioneers extended the run to four with a Butler kill for a 13-9 lead
  • A Chatterton made it 16-11 that was followed by a mini 4-3 UMO run
  • McIntosh hit the ball off a block, for the 20-15 advantage
  • Mahony and Tischler blocked a swing by Troy Magorien and Butler followed with a kill to push the Pioneers lead back to five, 22-17, and force a timeout
  • A service ace by Tobi Azeez gave Mount Olive a 3-0 run, and forced a SHU timeout with the lead cut to 22-20
  • Azeez served into the net out of the timeout and a Chatterton swing off the block gave SHU set point, before the Pioneers earned the set clincher on a Trojan hitting error

Second Set (SHU 25-16)

  • Tischler opened with a kill on the first swing of the set
  • Back-to-back SHU errors gave Mount Olive the 2-1 lead
  • After a Chatterton kill tied the set, he and Mahony recorded back-to-back blocks, to give SHU a 4-2 advantage
  • The teams traded points and errors, giving the Pioneers a 7-5 lead
  • Mount Olive climbed within a point on Eric Visgitis kill, where he tipped the ball behind his head
  • SHU scored the next six points, taking a 14-7
  • The run ended on a SHU service error, but Butler's kill off the block put SHU back on the offensive and the start of back-to-back points, for the 16-8 advantage
  • Mount Olive earned a point on a SHU service error, that Mahony answered with a kill
  • Another Trojan hitting error gave SHU an 18-9 lead
  • Chatterton gave SHU its 20th point, with a kill into the middle of the court and then landed the ensuing serve inside the line for an ace and a 21-12 lead
  • Mahony gave SHU set point with a kill to make it 24-14 and after the Trojans fended off a pair of set points, Butler's kill gave SHU the win

Third Set (Mount Olive 25-16)

  • The Pioneer scored first, but UMO tallied the next three points
  • A UMO service error made it 3-2 in the Trojans favor, and that was as close as the Pioneers would be in the set
  • The Trojans scored four of the next five points to move out to a 7-3 advantage
  • The lead ballooned to as many as nine, after a Pioneer hitting error at 18-9, the first time
  • Ferguson, Laxar and Iyanu Adebsi collaborated on a black to make it 21-12 in favor of the Trojans
  • SHU was able to close within 23-15 on a Paulo Samin kill, before kills from Azeez and Ferguson sealed the win

Fourth Set (SHU 25-19)

  • Mount Olive started with consecutive kills, giving SHU a 2-0 lead
  • Azeez bracketed a Chatterton kill to make the score 3-2 in favor of the Pioneers
  • After Chatterton recorded his second kill of the set, Azeez struck again to make the score 4-3 for SHU
  • A Butler kill made it 7-4, before the Trojans charged back to within a point, 8-7, on an Azeez kill
  • Mahony recorded consecutive kills after that point and then Butler and Chatterton combined for a block to give the Pioneers an 11-7 edge and force a timeout
  • Ferguson brought the Trojans within a pair, 14-12, but an ensuing service error and a Butler kill quickly pushed the lead back to four, 16-12
  • The Trojans were within 17-14 after another Ferguson kill, before again a service error made the deficit four, and UMO took a timeout, trailing 18-14
  • After Eric Visgitis earned a UMO point, Chatterton recorded kills around a UMO hitting error to give SHU a 21-15 lead
  • Chatterton and Balaguer combined to block Azeez for a 22-15 advantage
  • Mahony gave SHU its 23rd point with a kill, a UMO service error gave SHU match point
  • A Ferguson kill fended off the first match point, but Azeez hit a ball wide on the next service to give SHU the win
