Sacred Heart University senior Calin Butler has been named the EIVA Men's Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office this afternoon. Butler earns the Pioneers their first weekly award of the season, after helping the team to a 1-1 week.
Butler, a native of Lincoln, R.I., had 17 digs in two matches for the Pioneers, as well as three block assists. He led the team in digs, nine, in a 3-1 win over Mount Olive on Friday and then added eight more Saturday night versus Barton. Butler had two block assists in the Saturday match.
A graduate of LaSalle Academy, Butler excelled in the offensive part of the game as well, finishing with 25 kills and hitting .305. He added two aces in the Barton match as well. All told, Butler contributed 28.5 points on the weekend.
Butler is second on the team with 55 kills over the first six matches of the year, and is hitting .262. He is averaging 2.75 kills, 1.80 digs and 0.6 blocks per set this season.
The Pioneers are 4-2 on the season, after a weekend split that saw them earn a 3-1 win over Mount Olive. SHU is back in action this weekend when it travels to Charleston (W.V.) for a pair of EIVA matches, Friday and Saturday.
