Men's Volleyball Drops 3-0 Decision to Purdue Fort Wayne

The Sacred Heart University men's volleyball squad dropped a 3-0 decision to Purdue Fort Wayne at the Gates Sports Center. The Pioneers drop to 5-10 overall, while the Mastodons improve to 9-7 overall.

The Mastodons had a .289 hit percentage while the Pioneers posted a .043 hit percentage.

The Pioneers are back in action tomorrow, March 7 at 7 p.m. to face Ball State University

By The Numbers

  • Calin Butler led the Pioneers with seven kills, one ace, three block assists and six digs
  • Aaron Peterson registered four kills with a team high .125 hit percentage, four block assists and two digs
  • Pelegrin Vargas led all teams with 11 kills, one ace, three block assists and eight digs
  • Jon Deidrich tallied eight kills, three aces, one solo block and four block assists and two digs

First Set (25-17 Purdue)

  • A kill from Shawn Tischler gave Sacred Heart the 1-0 lead, then the Pioneers scored three straight points to lead 5-3 fueled by a Butler kill and ace along with a kill from Shawn Tischler
  • The Mastodons went on a 3-1 run to tie the set at 6-6
  • Sacred Heart went up 8-6 on two Purdue errors, but the Mastodons went on a 4-0 run to lead 10-8
  • With the first set tied at 11 all the Mastodons went on an 8-1 run to lead 19-12
  • Sacred Heart countered with a 3-0 run to cut into the host lead, 20-16
  • The Mastodons ended the set with a 5-1 run to take set one 25-17

Second Set (25-13 Purdue)

  •  Sacred Heart got out to an early 3-1 lead that included a kill from Peterson, however the Mastodons countered with a 3-0 run to lead 5-4
  • A kill from Butler tied the set at 5-5, but Purdue outscored Sacred Heart 10-1 to force a Sacred Heart timeout at 15-6
  • After the timeout the Pioneers went on a 4-0 run to cut into the host's advantage, 15-10
  • Purdue doubled their advantage going on a 5-0 run
  • The Mastodons outscored the Pioneers 5-3 over the next several rallies to win set two 25-13

Third Set (25-21 Purdue)

  • Purdue pulled out to a 6-1 lead early on five attack errors
  • Then the Mastodons outscored the Pioneers 4-1 to lead 10-2
  • The Pioneers outscored the host 4-1 with two kills from Butler and one from Mahony, 18-10
  • After several rallies Sacred Heart scored four straight points sparked by a Mahony kill, 20-15
  • A 6-1 run from Sacred Heart brought them within one of the Mastodons, fueled by two kills from Peterson and one from Shawn Tischler, 22-21
  • Purdue scored the final three points of the set seal the win 25-21
