Pioneers Top Saint Peter's 76-73 in Overtime

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (November 23, 2013)—The Sacred Heart women's basketball team won its first overtime game of the year Saturday 76-73 over Saint Peter's in the Yanitelli Center. Senior Ericka Norman (Chino Hills, Calif.) hit 50% knocking down a career-high seven field goals as the Pioneers improved to 2-2.

Gabrielle Washington (Mesa, Ariz.) led Sacred Heart lighting up the scoreboard with 18 points, while freshman Adaysha Williams (LaCrosse, Wis.) rounded out the trio of Pioneers in double-digits with 10 points.

The Peahens put the first points on the board, but Caitlyn Abela (South Easton, Mass.), who tallied nine points, landed a jumper seconds later sparking a six-point SHU run. The Pioneers held on tight to the lead, but Saint Peter's chipped away ultimately taking the lead 13-12 on Aziza May's layup.

With 10:36 left in the half, Lerae Ettienne (Kensington, Md.) laid one in kick-starting an 11-point SHU run, which was capped off by junior Katie Shepard (Lone Tree, Colo.), that put Sacred Heart up 22-17.

From there the Pioneers maintained the lead. Saint Peter's managed to tie the game once at 22, but a five-point SHU run fended them off. Down 39-31, the Peahens again tried to make a comeback in the final minute of the half, putting three unanswered free throws on the board, but Sacred Heart held on and at the buzzer was up 39-34.

Nearly four minutes into the second half, the Peahens added two from the foul line as part of the 12-point run that would reclaim the lead for Saint Peter's, minimizing Sacred Heart's lead to just three points. Moments later, Antonia Smith landed a shot from downtown to knot the game for the first of three times in the half at 43 before Hala Mostafa's three-pointer put the Peahens in the lead.

Sacred Heart tied the game again at 48 with a Washington layup, but were unable to take the lead as the Peahens answered with a jumper. With less than seven minutes left in regulation, Williams hit a trey to bring the Pioneers within two points of Saint Peter's. Seconds later, Shepard hit her second three of the day to put SHU back on top 62-61 as part of a 7-2 run.

The Pioneers were heading to a win, holding on tight to what slight lead they had. Just inside the final minute, Bridget Whitfield sunk a shot from downtown tying the game at 68 and sending Sacred Heart into its third overtime game of the season.

Norman recorded all four of the points in the first three and a half minutes of the overtime period, as both teams were held scoreless for the first two minutes. The Peahens managed five points in OT, but Washington's two buckets from the charity stripe with nine seconds on the clock sealed the 76-73 win for SHU.

Tuesday night, Sacred Heart takes on the Siena Saints at 7:00 p.m.
