Pioneers Draw St. John's in WNIT Opener

Full WNIT Bracket

For the second consecutive year, the Sacred Heart womens basketball team will be making an appearance in the postseason. SHU will travel to Jamaica, Queens to take on St. John's University on Friday at 7 p.m. The game will air live on ESPN3.

The Pioneers are playing in the postseason for the seventh time since 2006 and for the fifth time in the last seven seasons. SHU made its first-ever WNIT appearance in 2013, before earning a berth last season as well.

SHU has faced off against the Red Storm twice in school history, losing both contests. The first time the two teams faced off came in 2013, where the Pioneers lost 77-72 in an overtime thriller. This was the first contest for Head Coach Jessica Mannetti. The Pioneers also faced off against St. Johns last season, where they fell 67-54.

Coach Mannetti On First Round Of WNIT

-How does it feel to make the WNIT for the second time, in back-to-back years?
Being able to qualify for the WNIT in back to back years is a great reflection of the players hard work and dedication to uphold a tradition of excellence in our basketball program.  While we may have fallen short on our initial quest for the NEC gold ball, we continue to put ourselves in a strong position to secure post season play and participate in a highly competitive WNIT tournament to compete for a national championship.  I'm proud of this team and their relentless effort to uphold a high level of expectations for both our team and our program.

-What was your inital reaction when you heard you were taking on St. Johns?
The team is excited to play St. John's!  Fortunately, we have some familiarity with their team having played them two of the last four years at SHU and we are thankful for the opportunity to be challenged by a strong program close to home where our fans can come out and support us in our quest for a first round win!
