Women's Basketball Falls to #18 Kentucky 71-43

LEXINGTON, K.Y.- The Sacred Heart University Women's Basketball team fell to 18th ranked Kentucky by a final score of 71-43 this morning. The Pioneers have now concluded their non-conference slate and begin Northeast Conference play on Saturday Jan. 5 when SHU hosts Central Connecticut State. Tip-off is set 1:00 p.m.

Graduate student Erin Strock led the Pioneers in scoring as she racked up 19 points going 6-17 from the field and going 3-6 from beyond the arc. Sophomore Adrianne Hagood was not far behind tallying 14 points and three boards. Graduate student Katherine Haines tallied 12 boards while contributing four points. The Pioneers held the Wildcats to shooting just 35.1% from the field on the day while SHU performed better than the Wildcats from beyond the arc shooting 31.3% while SHU held Kentucky to 26.3%.

First Quarter 

  • Adrianne Hagood would lead the way for the Pioneers as she racked up seven points shooting 3-4 from the field and 1-2 from beyond the arc.
  • It would be back and forth the entire quarter as the Pioneers held the Wildcats to just 17 points while the Pioneers were able to tally 13.
  • SHU performed better from the field as they went 6-13 while the defense held Kentucky to shooting 6-24.
  • Graduate student Katherine Haines would tally three boards in the first to help keep the score tight.
  • Haines, Graduate student Erin Storck and Asia McCray each knoted two points.

Second Quarter

  • The Pioneers would be held to just one field goal in the entire quarter shooting just 1-16 from the field.
  • The SHU defense did hold Kentucky to shooting just 6-15 from the field and just 1-4 from three point land.
  • Erin Storck was the productive Pioneer racking up five points including a three which cut the Kentucky lead to 23-18 with 4:24 remaining in the quarter.
  • SHU went 4-8 from the free-throw line which contributed to four of the seven points the Pioneers scored in the quarter.
  • The half would close with Kentucky leading 33-20. 

Third Quarter

  • The Pioneers would be held to no field goals for the first five minutes of the third while Kentucky would be able to go on a 14-0 run for 5:12.
  • Towards the end of the quarter the Pioneers would be able to make three of their last four field goals to make the third quarter score 56-33.
  • SHU would go 4-12 from the field in the third courtesy of Storck and Hagood. Storck tallied nine points in the third while Hagood racked up four.

Fourth Quarter

  • Both sides would be held to minimal scoring as the Pioneers racked up 10 points while SHU's defense held the Wildcats to 15.
  • From the field the Pioneers went 3-11 while Kentucky went 6-18.
  • The Pioneers did outrebound the Wildcats 11-8 in the fourth ending the total day with 35.
  • A trio of made free throws by Allyson Murphy, a made jumper by Hagood and a three pointer by Storck would be the teams points in the quarter.
