PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Sacred Heart women's fencing team wrapped up competition at the Northeast Fencing Conference Meet #1 on Sunday at Brown University. The Pioneers finished the day with one win and five losses through six rounds of competition.
First-year Sophie Witek was the standout on the day for the Sacred Heart women's fencing team as she posted a cumulative 18-6 record in the sabre event.
Facing the host Brown in the opening round of competition for SHU, the Pioneers were handed a 21-6 loss against one of the top teams in the region. Despite the setback, the epee grouping posted a 5-4 win over the Bears as Daria Rudakova led the way with a perfect 3-0 mark against Brown in the discipline.
Another epee win for the Pioneers came in the next round against Brandeis as the Pioneeers edged out a 5-4 victory with the weapon but ultimately fell by a 19-8 margin. Ashley Cherry led the way in the epee as she posted a perfect 3-0 mark against Brandeis.
The strongest all-around effort on the day for SHU came against New Hampshire as the Pioneers posted their lone win with an 18-9 triumph over the Wildcats. The Pioneers won the foil (6-3) and epee (8-1) rounds before dropping a tight 5-4 decision in the sabre. Rudakova and Cherry both went 3-0 in the epee while Tia Petrides and Allyson Stejakoski each went 3-0 in the foil.
After dropping a pair of bouts to Wellesley (20-7) and Boston College (24-3), the Pioneers concluded the day of competition with a 19-8 loss to MIT. Rudakova went 3-0 in the epee while Witek recorded a pair of wins in the sabre as the duo showed well against MIT.
