FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart women's fencing team competed in its only home meet of the 2019-20 season, the SHU Dual Meet, on Sunday in the Pitt Center. The Pioneers went 0-6 on the day in bouts against Princeton (24-3 score), Vassar (18-9), Penn State (23-4), NYU (18-9), Temple (22-5) and Brown (21-6).
Starting the day against one of the premier Ivy League programs in Princeton, SHU suffered 1-8 defeats in the sabre, foil and epee to lose to the Tigers, 24-3.
Competing against Vassar for the first time in 2019-20, the Pioneers dropped a 18-9 decision and were edged out with 5-4 losses in both the sabre and epee disciplines. First-year Sophie Witek went 3-0 in the sabre while juniors Ashley Cherry and Daria Rudakova each went 2-1 with the epee weapon against Vassar opponents.
SHU battled Penn State in round three, falling to the Nittany Lions, 23-4. Cherry was the top performer for the Pioneers, going a perfect 3-0 in the epee round against the Nittany Lions.
Witek led the way for SHU against NYU, going 3-0 in the sabre as the Pioneers dropped a 18-9 decision. With the epee weapon, SHU scored a 6-3 victory against NYU as Cherry again went 3-0 while Rudakova picked up two wins to lead the Pioneers.
The Pioneers finished the day up with losses to Temple (22-5) and Brown (21-6). Cherry continued her strong day with 3-0 showings against both opponents as she completed the day with a team-best mark of 14-4 in the epee.
SHU heads into the winter break and will next be in action on Saturday, January 18 with a dual meet at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
