Women’s Fencing Shows Well at NFC Meet #3, Earning Three Wins on the Day


BOSTON, Mass. – The Sacred Heart women's fencing team put together one of it's most-successful meet of the 2019-20 season as the Pioneers went 3-3 in six rounds of competition at the NFC Meet #3 hosted by Tufts on Sunday. The standouts on the day included first-year Sophie Witek in the sabre as she was a perfect 15-0 on the day in her bouts while Tia Petrides combined to go 15-3 in six rounds of competition with the foil and both Daria Rudakova (13-2) and Ashley Cherry (10-5) had productive days with the epee weapon.

  • SHU opened the meet with a 16-11 triumph over Smith College with victories coming in the foil (6-3) and epee (7-2) that sealed the win
  • The Pioneers featured several undefeated showing as Sophie Witek (sabre), Allyson Stejakoski (foil), Tia Petrides (foil), Ashley Cherry (epee) and Daria Rudakova (epee) all went 3-0 with their respective weapons
  • SHU cruised to a 22-5 victory over Dartmouth, thanks to 9-0 wins by forfeit in the sabre and epee
  • Petrides went 3-0 in the foil against the Big Green
  • A two-match win streak was snapped in a 16-11 loss to Boston Univ. as all two of the three weapon rounds were decided by just one point as SHU fell in the foil and epee by a score of 5-4
  • Petrides continued to dominate as she went 3-0 in the foil for the third straight meet to start the day while Rudakova also went 3-0 in the epee. Witek continued her hot start with a 3-0 sweep with the sabre
  • The largest defeat SHU suffered on the day came via a 19-8 loss to the host Tufts as Petrides and Rudakova each suffered their first loss of the day while Witek continued her run going 3-0 with the sabre
  • A third straight loss for SHU came against Vassar as the Pioneers were defeated by a score of 18-9 as SHU couldn't overcome an 8-1 loss in the foil despite winning the epee 5-4
  • Witek continued her undefeated stretch in the sabre while Cherry led the way to a SHU win in the epee as she went 3-0 including the match-sealing fifth point that gave SHU a 5-4 epee victory. Petrides scored the lone SHU win in the foil
  • The final meet of the day came down to the wire as SHU eked out a 14-13 victory over UMass to earned the Pioneers a 3-3 record for the day
  • Witek went 3-0 once again the sabre to seal a 15-0 day for the first-year with her sabre weapon while SHU managed close victories in the foil (5-4) and epee (6-3) that pushed the Pioneers past the Minutewomen
  • Petrides picked up another 3-0 showing in the foil while Stejakoski finished strong with two wins in the foil
  • Rudakova and Cherry each went 3-0, accounting for all six SHU points in the epee that clinched the overall victory for the Pioneers over UMass
