Lydia Werlau Doubles Up, Earning All-NEC Second Team and All-Rookie Honors

SOMERSET, N.J. – Sacred Heart women's lacrosse freshman phenom Lydia Werlau completes her incredible campaign with a pair of All-Northeast Conference nods, as announced by the at the league's annual awards banquet on Wednesday. Werlau picked up All-NEC Second Team and All-Rookie honors.

Werlau becomes the first SHU freshman to earn All-Rookie Team laurels since Avery Farhat back in 2015. More impressively, Werlau becomes the first Pioneer to earn All-Rookie and All-NEC Second Teams honors in the same season since Kelly Keenan back in 2012.

An NEC-leading four-time Rookie of the Week selection, Werlau made her presence known all season long, notching a SHU rookie record 45 points across 15 games played. She became the first NEC player since 2015 to win three straight Rookie of the Week awards as Werlau went on a three-week from from April 8-22. Her 38 goals this season set a SHU rookie record while she added 16 draw controls (third-highest mark on the team) and went 13-for-27 on free position shots in 2019.

Werlau made her mark with a massive nine-goal outing in an overtime loss at LIU Brooklyn on April 14 that set a SHU single-game record. At the time of the game, Werlau's nine goals scored matched an NCAA-leading total set in a game this season. The mark has since been passed but her nine-goal effort still sits tied for the second-highest individual goal scoring total in a game this season.

In NEC play alone, Werlau racked up 28 points (25 goals, three assists) in seven games. She tied for first in goals per game (3.57) and sat seventh in in points per game (4.00) among NEC players in conference-only play. Werlau tallied the second-most shots per game (8.71) in NEC play this season and had the second-most free position goals (eight) of any player in the league.
