Women’s Cross Country Finishes 29th at 2019 NCAA Northeast Regionals

RESULTS

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Racing against the best competition the Northeast has to offer, the Sacred Heart women's cross country team posted a 29th place finish out of 37 teams on a modified road course on Friday morning. Harvard claimed the victory with 92 team points on the day while the Pioneers' 29th place result matches their 2018 NCAA Northeast Regional finish.

The 6k race was moved by the NCAA Track & Field and Cross Country Committee from the Audubon Golf Course in Buffalo to a road course due to concerns with poor footing, ice and student-athlete safety. The late change in plans was a welcome change for the Pioneers as all seven in competition on Friday posted personal-best 6k times in the action.

  • Senior Jacqueline Thorne certainly made the most of her fourth and final NCAA Regional appearance as she finished with an NCAA Regional event personal-best 138th place while crossing the line with her best career time in a 6k at 21:51.9
  • Thorne's time was much improved from her 2018 performance which clocked in at 24:18.9, an improvement of more than two minutes
  • Prior to today, Thorne's previous-best time at the NCAA Regional was 23:59.7 from her 2016 freshman season
  • This also marks the seventh straight meet in which Thorne has competed this season wherein she finished as the fastest Pioneer on the day
  • Running well in just her second NCAA Regional event, sophomore Gaelyn Kattman was second-fastest on the day for SHU as she placed 144th overall with a 6k personal-best time of 22:01.3
  • Kattman improved significantly from her 2018 NCAA Regional result of 158th place with a time of 24:26.3, moving up 14 spots in the overall standings and improving 2:25 minutes on her time from last year
  • 2019 All-NEC performer senior Bianca De Lucia was next to finish for SHU as she completed the 6k course in 22:39.6 which was good enough for 185th place overall
  • De Lucia's second career NCAA Regional appearance was a good one as her time was a personal-best for a 6k course
  • Rounding out the scoring for SHU on the day was junior Brigit Kelly who took 193rd place with a time of 22:45.5 while junior Kelly Arsenault was fifth-best on the team with a 205th place finish, crossing the line in 22:53.4
  • Also competing for the Pioneers was freshman Kathleen Delaney (229th place, 23:35.6) and junior Gabrielle Vega (233rd, 23:40.5)
